Today, in Meet a Character Friday<\/b>, I am very pleased to introduce Adolphe Fouret, the duc of Malbourne, from author Mariana Gabrielle’s Royal Regard, <\/i>Book One of The Sailing Home Series. <\/i>In this wonderful Regency, the villainous Monsieur le duc will give readers chills (can we say frisson<\/i>, anyone?) as well as the vapors. And all wicked shenanigans will center around Bella Holsworthy, who has returned to England after fifteen years roaming the globe with her husband, an elderly diplomat, now elevated to an Earldom. Bella quickly finds herself in a place more perilous than any in her travels–the Court of King George IV. This shy, not-so-young lady faces wicked agendas, society’s censure, and the realities of a woman soon to be alone in England. And as she is unaccustomed to the ways of the beau monde<\/i>, she is disarmed and deceived by a dissolute duke and a noble French \u00e9migr\u00e9 <\/i>with a silver tongue. Preoccupied by the weight of his own history, he managed to sit comfortably in the fauteuil<\/i> chair behind the desk, one ankle crossed over his knee. His riding attire was immaculate, not a stitch out of place, from the Trone d\u2019Amour<\/i> knot in his black silk cravat to the shine on his Hoby boots. <\/div>\n
Were this unpleasant business complete, he could take one of his two remaining riding horses to the hidden cave in the cliffs at the back of his lifeless formal garden, the spot with the best view of Calais. He had sat there so many times that he could see and hear the docks in his mind, even if the city were obscured by fog, as it would be today.<\/div>\n
He tapped his riding crop on the heel of his boot as he observed, \u201cYou look shabby, Michelle. Did you leave your bourgeois<\/i> husband and the money he stole by guillotine?\u201d<\/div>\n
She flinched as if slapped. \u201cNon, Monseigneur<\/i>, he died many years ago and his money with him. I am untidy because it has been a long journey, and I came directly from the harbor.\u201d She glanced at the bag just inside the door. \u201cI did not even stop to arrange lodging, for I knew you would want to hear my news without delay.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cYou look like you serviced a boat filled with sailors to pay for the crossing,\u201d he sneered. \u201cDid you plan to service me to secure your bed for the night?\u201d When her head ducked away from his vicious tone, he added, \u201cPerhaps if you go down on your knees for my stableboy, he will share his haystack.\u201d<\/div>\n
Her face flushed, but she only said, \u201cI have important information, Monseigneur<\/i>.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cIt must be vital,\u201d he said with a mordant jeer, \u201cto bring you all the way from \u00c9pinal. What will your information cost me this time? I have no more family for your fianc\u00e9 to ransom.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cMonseigneur<\/i>, as always, I wish only to serve your interests.\u201d She failed to keep the reproof from her tone when she said, \u201cYou recall it was I who told you of the duchess\u2019s betrayal, and I who aided in your escape, at great danger to myself. I have been loyal to you since we were children, Monseigneur,<\/i> and always a friend to your sisters before the\u2014\u201d Her voice broke. \u201cI had hoped my long devotion to la famille Fouret<\/i> would serve to assure you of my intent.\u201d<\/div>\n
His face and voice remained cold, but he asked, for the first time without derision, \u201cWhat has brought you so far from home?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cIt is about the duchesse<\/i>, Monseigneur.\u201d<\/div>\n
He sat up swiftly, his knuckles white on the edge of his desk. \u201cAmelia?\u201d His lips were drawn in a thin line, eyebrows a dark slash in a face suddenly drained of color. \u201cWhat information can there be about her?\u201d <\/div>\n
\u201cThere was a man asking questions, seeking out servants from the ch\u00e2teau<\/i>. Of course, very few remain in \u00c9pinal, but he was quite determined to discover the circumstances of her death.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cLa mar\u00e9chauss\u00e9e<\/i>?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cNon, Monseigneur<\/i>, not the constabulary, nor the king\u2019s men. Un Anglais<\/i>. He said he knew her as a child.\u201d<\/div>\n
He sat back to consider what Englishman might be asking questions after thirty years. Amelia\u2019s family was long dead, and once he had disposed of the peasant with whom, according to Michelle, his wife had betrayed him, she\u2019d had no friends to make inquiries. He had never taken her to Court, nor made his marriage known there, and she had never been allowed the freedom to become known in \u00c9pinal. Aside from the few servants who had attended her at the ch\u00e2teau<\/i>, most also now dead, he couldn\u2019t think of one person in England or France who would even remember his wife\u2019s name. <\/div>\n
\u201cWho is he?\u201d <\/div>\n
\u201cI do not know, Monseigneur<\/i>,\u201d she winced, turning her face away as though expecting a blow. \u201cHe paid well to ensure no one spoke his name, and did not find me before he returned to Paris.\u201d Implied in her tone: of all his servants, she was the only one who had kept her silence about him, though he knew that was probably why no one gave her the man\u2019s name. <\/a><\/div>\n
