Apart from Richard and Gabriela, another of my favorite characters in the novel is Maurice N\u00f4ret, Richard’s counterpart in French intelligence.  I had a blast creating him, especially his idiosyncracies, his cynicism, and dry humor.  This is the first encounter with Richard.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cDrop the apologies.  Seldon requested priority one, and when you\u2019re given priority one in France, mon ami, <\/i>you get everything you want, including me.\u201d  Maurice couldn\u2019t help the chuckle.  \u201cThat sly fox sent you out without telling you the whole story again, didn\u2019t he?  Another favor, eh?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/a>\u201cStuff it, Maurice.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>We\u2019ve got to work fast.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>How much did my bastard of a boss fill you in?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEnough, although he left the juicy parts for you later.  <\/span>It must be pretty big because our friends from the Sinai want to get their hands in the pie.  <\/span>They\u2019ve already made contact.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cWhat have you told them?\u201d <\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cBuf.<\/i>\u201d  <\/span>Maurice shrugged away the Israelis as a minor discomfort.  <\/span>\u201cYou know us French.  <\/span>We\u2019re ticklish about our territory.  <\/span>I thanked them very politely\u2014\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cExtremely diplomatic of you,\u201d Richard interrupted, amused.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cOf course.  <\/span>Said we would handle at this end\u2014\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cVery efficiently.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cAnd would notify them immediately if we needed their assistance.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cUtmost cooperation.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cMinimal interference,\u201d Maurice finished.  <\/span>\u201cHowever, not that I mind working with you but\u2014\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cWhy the C\u00f4te d\u2019Azur<\/i>?\u201d Richard asked.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
A confirming grunt.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cMust be the weather and the choice real estate.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Maurice laughed.  <\/span>\u201cDieu<\/i>, but it will be good to work with you again, mon ami<\/i>.  <\/span>It was getting very boring around here.  <\/span>Not much to do, now that everything\u2019s so warm and cozy in the East thanks to our newly enlightened ex-Communist friends.  <\/span>They\u2019re even making us work on local stuff.  <\/span>Boring.  <\/span>I\u2019d rather be working on something interesting, like Kosovo or Algeria.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Richard chuckled.  <\/span>\u201cSuch waste of a new office, huh.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\u201cOui<\/i>,\u201d Maurice retorted.  \u201cThey should have kept the money and given us a raise…”<\/span><\/span>
